Diazepam (or similar medications) for Flying

We do not prescribe diazepam or other sedative medications (such as benzodiazepines) for fear of flying or for the purpose of flying.

This policy is based on current medical and safety guidance. Sedating medications can:

  • Reduce your ability to respond in an in-flight emergency
  • Increase the risk of blood clots (DVT) on long flights
  • Interact unpredictably with alcohol or altitude
  • Cause excessive sedation or agitation
  • Lead to dependence or withdrawal
  • Not effectively treat phobias or anxiety long-term

For fear of flying, we recommend evidence-based alternatives such as fear-of-flying courses, psychological therapies, or self-help programmes, which are safer and more effective.

Thank you for your understanding.
